Medieval Chest in Laneham Church, Nottinghamshire

These are some additonal photos I took when I visited Laneham Church.  The express purpose for making the visit was to take measurements of the chest with enough detail that I could make a reproduction.  These are thumbnails here, with each one being a link to the large photo.  Don't miss the first page of photos...or the page showing my small reproduction.

The entire chest, with a tape measure laid across it. (60kb) The right end of the chest, showing the width measurement of 68". (92kb)

The length of the lid, showing all of the iron straps, and the location of the hinges. (78kb)

A close up of two hinges. (83kb)
The height and depth of the chest. (77kb)

The depth of the chest. (81kb)
The width of the carved roundel. (36kb) The width of the spread part of the iron strapwork. (49kb)

The width of the large nail heads. (41kb) The width of the "tray".  (31kb)

The depth of the "tray".  (33kb)

The fascinating discovery about the "tray" is that it was actually an inner lockbox.  Here you can see the lockplate, and the two hinges (for the missing lockbox lid) in the background.  (86kb)

The inside of the right end, showing the clenched over nails (that are attaching the strapwork). (23kb)

The underside of the lid showing the clenched over nails. (25kb)
One of the straps on the lid, showing the multiple nails attaching it to the lid.  (51kb)

The underside of the same strap, showing the left and right positioning of the nails. (28kb)
The underside of the chest, from the end.  Notice the interesting placement of all the iron straps. (28kb)

The underside of the chest, from the front.  Here you can see the center strap and the end-to-end strap.  (28kb)
The left end of the chest, showing the three straps (and hinges).  (58kb)

The center of the chest, showing the short center strap with the hasp for a lock. (58kb)
The right end of the chest showing its three straps and hinges. (57kb) The inside bottom of the chest, showing the quarter round pieces around the edge. (32kb)
